DOCTORS CORNER

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure

Childhood vaccines are undoubtedly the most important medical advancement in the field of Pediatrics in the last 50 years. With the advent of vaccines, horrible diseases such as diphtheria, polio, meningitis, tetanus, pertussis and measles had been almost completely eradicated in this country and worldwide.

Recent articles in the Pediatric medical journals have indicated that there is resurgence in vaccine preventable diseases in this country and around the world. From January to June this year 156 cases of measles have been reported in this country. This is the highest number of cases in the United States since 1996. Most of the cases (85%) occurred in children who were unvaccinated. In France, more than 7500 cases of measles were reported in the first three months of this year. Thousands of cases have also been reported in Switzerland. These staggering numbers of cases are the direct result of the European community’s reluctance to immunize their children.

In addition to the resurgence of the measles virus there is also recent about the resurgence of another vaccine preventable diseases, pertussis. Pertussis is the bacteria that causes whooping cough. In this country each year hundreds of cases of pertussis are reported. Whooping cough is a significant respiratory illness that can cause respiratory distress and death in an infant. In recent years adults and older children are being reimmunized against this disease in an effort to protect infants who are not yet able to be immunized.

The doctors at Fairway Pediatrics believe that it is imperative that all children should be properly and timely immunized. Modified immunization schedules and postponement of vaccines only put the child at risk for contracting serious and life threatening diseases which are completely preventable.  While we acknowledge that some parents are anxious about following the recommended immunization schedule, it cannot be stressed enough that this schedule has been thoroughly researched and is safe.

Perhaps the strongest testimony to the success of immunizations is the fact that we have reached a point where contracting vaccine preventable disease is less feared than the vaccines themselves. At this point in time a concept called “herd immunity” has protected our population, i.e. there are not enough susceptible people in the population to sustain significant outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases. This has led to complacency or a false sense of security with regard to diseases which were feared by our parents and grandparents. As more people are delaying or altogether forgoing vaccination, there will be a point at which the diseases will return with significant outbreaks, and the result will be tragic.
